Electric Drives 2.0
The electric drive is increasingly replacing the classic combustion engine. It can be found in many industrial applications and its importance continues to increase due to climate change. But how can electric drives be designed and produced more efficiently? New designs, modern materials, innovative manufacturing processes and the holistic digitalization of engineering, production planning and production offer promising approaches.
- Project start: July 2020
- Runtime: 3 Years
- Funding amount: €10.1 million
- Number of partners: 16
Objectives
CONTACT Research has set itself the goal of further digitalizing the development process for electric drives. To this end, CONTACT is providing the development platform CIM Database PLM and the IoT system CONTACT Elements for IoT as part of the project and is further enhancing them with new functionalities and methods:
◾ New methods in product development in the context of a Configure-to-Order+ (CTO+) process to enable more efficient customer needs while standardizing the product.
◾ Modern data flows between PLM-ERP-MES and IoT to power the Digital Twins in production and operations.
◾ Innovative development methods for plant engineering with the goal of a plant twin to enable fast virtual validation in production planning.
◾ Closed loop engineering for the feedback of knowledge from operations and production for data-based development processes of new product generations.

Motivation
Large electric drives are one of the building bricks for the global decarbonization of our industry. They are relevant wherever e-drives are used - in rail technology, shipbuilding, raw materials extraction and many other industries. Empowering developing companies to sustainably produce efficient product designs through digital support and efficient production is our goal.
With Siemensstadt 2.0 and the Werner von Siemens Centre located there, Berlin has gained a research campus that is characterized by proximity to application and research.
