The University of Wolverhampton racing team shifts up a gear with
CIM Database PLM

The School of Engineering of the British University of Wolverhampton and its motorsport team participate in the CONTACT University programme. As a sponsor and technical partner CONTACT Software supports the students in the further development of their racing cars.

University of Wolverhampton Racing (UWR), based in Telford, UK, is made up of members from various engineering disciplines and is the only student team participating in the F3 Cup and the AR Morgan Challenge. The university thus gives students the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a racing environment and to realise their dream of working in motorsport.

With CIM Database, the open and scalable platform for Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), students expand their skills and accelerate vehicle development. The UWR uses CONTACT's PLM system to manage product structures, data, tasks and projects across disciplines, system and organizational boundaries. In this way, the teams improve their cooperation and shorten the construction time of the racing cars.

"We’re proud to welcome the UWR to the CONTACT University programme which aims at supporting outstanding projects with innovative PLM and IoT solutions," says Michael S. Murgai, Director Strategy & Operations and member of the management board of CONTACT Software. "We have chosen to sponsor the UWR team because we have been impressed by the willingness to develop consistently and the commitment of the students involved," adds James Wright, Partner Account Manager at CONTACT.

Dr. Syed Hasan, Head of the School of Engineering and Chairman of UWR, emphasizes the benefits that the technical partnership with CONTACT has for the students: " As the University of Opportunity, it is our objective to make our graduates “workplace ready” to fill the engineering skills gap. Using CONTACTS’s software platforms to build and hone our racing cars will give them new knowledge to apply in industry and help us find extra seconds on the racing circuit too”.

UWR has over 60 students in three different competitions and takes part in races all over the UK, from Donington Park to Silverstone to Brands Hatch. The F3 Team has enjoyed great success in recent years and has never finished a season outside the top three. The Morgan Challenge Team, which works closely with the Morgan Motor Company factory, won the AR Motorsport Trophy and the Morgan Challenge Trophy in 2019.
