The power of the Asset Administration Shell
The Asset Administration Shell (AAS) is a vendor-independent standard for the digital twin. It enables your company to create a “digital file” of products and virtual objects in which you store all relevant information that is essential during the lifecycle of an asset. This data is available in a standardized form for exchange with manufacturers, suppliers, customers, and operators.
CONTACT Elements provides all the functions you need for this key technology. You can create, manage, and share the AAS of your assets within the software, giving you a transparent view of their real-time condition. Based on this, you can increase efficiency in production and service and create new, product-related offerings.
Benefits of an AAS
- Consider the carbon footprint in product development
- Increase transparency towards customers, suppliers and partners
- Enable end-to-end information streams
- Improve products, create new services
Using AAS in CONTACT Elements
Consider the carbon footprint in product development
With the AAS submodel for the Product Carbon Footprint, you can record and share sustainability data systematically. This not only simplifies compliance with regulations and information obligations. It also supports product development. Your teams gain access to all the relevant data for the evaluation of environmental aspects (e.g., the CO₂ equivalents of purchased parts or aspects such as energy consumption and waste reduction). This level of transparency helps you minimize the negative environmental impacts of assets throughout their lifecycle at an early stage of product development.

Increase transparency towards customers, suppliers, and partners
An AAS contains all information that is relevant during an asset’s lifecycle (e.g., operating data, handover documents, or technical specifications). This transparency helps to reduce errors and speed up processes. In CONTACT Elements, all it takes is a few clicks. The submodels within the Asset Administration Shell – which describe functional areas – are displayed in a dashboard overview. You can download, upload, update, or (de)activate them via a widget.

Enable end-to-end information streams
Via the AAS, you can securely exchange all relevant asset data between IT systems with suppliers, partners and customers. CONTACT Elements thus supports you in creating consistent cross-departmental or cross-company processes while integrating product information in a standardized way.

Improve products, create new services
The data from an Asset Administration Shell helps to improve existing products and manufacturing processes and to implement new, product-related services. Companies can integrate AI algorithms and models into CONTACT Elements to analyze AAS data. This opens up numerous opportunities, such as predictive approaches for maintenance and service, automation of service tasks, or new, personalized services.

CONTACT drives AAS innovation
In the Industrial Digital Twin Association (IDTA), 113 organizations from research, industry and software work on further developing the AAS and making it usable in industry. CONTACT Software actively contributes to the association, which defines the content and submodels of an AAS. Accordingly, our Elements platform is listed as “Industry-ready” on the IDTA website.
AAS in customer service
As part of the AASHub research project, CONTACT Software has developed a solution for the exchange of Asset Administration Shells in collaboration with the Ruhr University Bochum and industry partners. In our technical article, you can read how the AASHub simplifies work in the service department and learn about future scenarios that will be possible with the AAS.
